A Simple Tea Bowl

$75.00
A Simple Tea Bowl

Priest Jody Hojin Kimmel of the Mountains and Rivers Order handcrafts these stoneware bowls.
In creating this stoneware bowl, Hojin combines the naturalness of the Zen aesthetic with the raw ingredients of the mountains and rivers surrounding Zen Mountain Monastery. The unique glaze of this bowl contains ashes from the altars and fireplaces of the Monastery as well as iron oxide. While its warm earth tones - from deep chestnut brown to riverbank sand - serve to enhance the vivid color of whisked powdered green tea, each bowl is also a unique work of art in and of itself. Size, shape and color will vary. Average diameter approximately 5'' and 3'' deep.

I ordered a pair of these wonderful bowls, not as part of a tea set, but as offering bowls for my altar. The store staff chose a closely matched set, one of which contains a mixture of rice, grain and precious stone chips, and the other, water.
I found that the bowls are slightly porous, despite their glaze, so they now sit on a pair of slate tiles to protect the altar surface against moisture from the water offering.
I am extremely pleased with these handmade art works, and have a little bit of Mt Tremper on my altar in which to ground my practice.
