Master Dogen's 300 Koan Shobogenzo: Case 81
The ancient Chinese Zen poem, Identity of Relative and Absolute, declares, "Within light there is darkness, but do not try to understand that darkness. Within darkness there is light, but do not look for that light." John Daido Loori, Roshi takes up this central teaching of Mahayana Buddhism--that form is precisely emptiness and emptiness precisely form--and makes it very personal. Master Yunmen said, "Everyone has a light." Each one of us is a perfect Buddha. How do we realize that perfection in our kitchen preparing breakfast, or while driving to the office at the peak of rush hour?
