Three Worlds Are Mind--Nothing Is Hidden

Three Worlds Are Mind--Nothing Is Hidden

Koans of the Way of Reality: Case 108
The phrase "the three worlds are nothing but mind" is said to capture the totality of Buddha's teachings. The three realms are the world of form, the world of formlessness, and the world of desire. This is inclusive of all human experience. It includes past, present, and future; form and emptiness; existence and nonexistence; coming and going. The three worlds are suchness, and there are no sentient beings and no mind outside of the three worlds.

In this koan, Master Gensha questions one of his students about what it means to say the three worlds are mind, and Master Dogen uses the same teaching as a starting point to an examination of the nature of mind and reality. With the three realms being nothing but mind, nothing is hidden.
