Daido Roshi often said, "I am not you and you are not me, and yet we are the same thing." But what does this really mean? In this talk Shugen Sensei points out that the teachings tell us there is essential purity, but there are also mountains and rivers, garbage and disease. The concepts of form and emptiness are sticking points for many practitioners, mainly because it's impossible for our conditioned minds to simultaneously hold oneness and differentiation. Trying to discuss this doesn't lead any closer to the truth; as an old master said, "It's all noodles." What's required is a leap of consciousness, a leap beyond language to the experience of our intrinsic freedom and unity.
