True Dharma Eye Case 168: Yangshan's "Inconceivable Bright Clear Mind"
One of the most important pieces of literature in Zen Buddhism, Master Dogen's "Mountains and Rivers Sutra" is a brilliant exploration of the nature of mind. According to Dogen, everything we see is nothing other than our mind. Although our conditioning may tell us that the natural world is separate from us, Dogen uses his celebrated poetic language to show the essential intimacy that underlies all phenomena. Daido Roshi asks us to enter into this clear, bright mind and experience the same intimacy with mountains and rivers as our illustrious Zen ancestors. This talk is a wonderful starting point for those new to Dogen, and essential for those already familiar with his work.
