The Three Pillars of Zen. Edited by Philip Kapleau

$16.00
The Three Pillars of Zen. Edited by Philip Kapleau

For many, this is the ''first book'' on Zen practice in America. It is a modern Buddhist classic, a comprehensive, exciting overview of the history and discipline of Zen filled with formal discourses, whimsical anecdotes, and letters. It includes priceless introductory lectures by Yasutani Roshi, as well as rare transcriptions of actual face-to-face interviews conducted by Yasutani Roshi with his students. The 35th anniversary edition has been updated and revised, including new photographs and a new afterword.

This is an excellent book. As a novice I find that I return to it on a regular basis (sometimes daily). From the clear introductions and informative biographies to the detailed posture instructions - this book provides a great resource. I recommended it to other novices (or anyone for that matter) interested in getting the essential concepts and practices of Zen in one volume. Quite importantly this book stresses the experiential nature of Zen practice and does not lose the reader in long theoretical expositions of Buddhist concepts. The descriptions of one's personal experience are comforting, encouraging and inspiring.
