This anthology is a gold mine of teachings, delivering the vitality of the Buddha's unedited words as well as the means to navigate them. The author arranges the Buddha's discourses thematically, beginning each chapter with an introduction and following with a collection of discourses. The author of this book, Bhikkhu Bodhi, is a Theravadin monk who resides at a Mahayana monastery, and I think that his attitude of nonsectarianism is easily detected in this book. A monumental work, which traces the path of practice from investigating the matter of suffering all the way up to the end of all suffering, this is a collection that, to use the author's wording for the Pali Canon, is "consistently sane, lucid, and sober." Some may struggle with the repetitious structure of the Pali suttas, but every passage is concise and relevant. Nothing is astray. Furthermore, though these scriptures have traditionally been used by the Theravadin lineage, the author never emphasises the point. These teachings are presented for all who wish to take up the way of the Buddhadharma. I consider this to be a true Dharma light for any practitioner.
