Mahaprajapati, or “ leader of the Great Assembly,” was Shakyamuni’s aunt and foster mother, as well as the first nun to be ordained in the Buddhist Order. Venerated for her courage and determination, she convinced the Buddha—with the help of his cousin Ananda—to let women shave their heads and become renunciants.
