The mokugyo, or fish drum, is used in Zen monasteries to keep the beat during the chanting of the liturgy. Its deep, rich tone makes it clear why the image of the fish—symbolic of wakefulness—is used. Includes striker and cushion. Available in two sizes:

Small: 3" d
Large: 7" d

I just received the small mokugyo. It has a great sound for such a small instrument, very crisp and louder than expected. It's perfect for my small meditation room. One complaint: the striker end does not have a cloth cover but merely a wide, black rubber band, kind of tacky. I plan to cover it with cloth.
Don't let this dissuade you from a purchase, it is a lovely instrument, just a suggestion to the good people at the monastery store.

I bought the small mokugyo a few months ago. Since then, I use it for personal use. It looks just like the picture and sounds exactly like the sound they post online. The sound is clear and sharp. The mokugyo and the mallet are firm and well made. Highly recommended for personal or small group use.

I ordered the small mokugyo a long time ago and have been happy with it ever since. It has a nice crisp deep sound for it's size and is well crafted.

This mokugyo is truly suitable for a meditation group, but I find it very nice to use at home when I am practice alone. The 7" is not a complete description of its size, so I was surprised and pleased to see its large size, when it came in the mail. The sound is even and better than the one that you hear online. I recommend it to any Sangha - Christine at Community of Mindful Living, UUFR, Raleigh, NC.
